DORSET, UK (10 August 2007) -- The body of a diver has been brought ashore after it was found near a First World War shipwreck where a Northamptonshire man went missing two years ago. A man from Surrey discovered the body on the seabed 400ft from the Kyarra wreck while he was diving off the coast of Swanage, Dorset, on Wednesday. Avon and Somerset police divers brought the body ashore today as well as dive equipment found alongside it. The families of two divers who went missing in August 2005 have been informed but formal identification by DNA is expected to take several weeks. The body was in 30 metres of water and wearing a dive suit, a Dorset police spokesman said. A 48-year-old woman from Cambridgeshire and a 22-year-old male from Northamptonshire both went missing while diving off the wreck in August 2005. The missing Northants man is Mark Steel, of Langdon Close, Daventry, who wasn't found despite huge police efforts two years ago. He was a member of the Northampton Sub-Aqua Club, and had also represented the England speedway team at under-21 level. He had successfully completed more than 80 dives in the brief two-year period he had taken up the sport. |
