HONOLULU, Hawaii (12 August 2007) -- "I was sick to my stomach. I couldn't believe it. Not my brother." That was the reaction from Guy Perkins after he heard his brother-in-law, Larry Freed, is missing, possibly swept off to sea. As the family anxiously waited for any news at Kualoa Beach Park, a fire rescue helicopter refueled for another fly-by in a search of him. He was free diving with two buddies late Saturday night when he got separated. The two came ashore, but Freed hasn't been seen since. The three were diving with only two flashlights. Capt. Earl Kealoha of the Honolulu Fire Department said, "they just found a pair of booties and a fin. There was another fin found earlier this morning and that has been confirmed to have been worn by the diver we are looking for currently." Fire department and Coast Guard helicopters searched from the air as DLNR boats scoured the waters off Chinaman's Hat. Two scuba divers looked underwater for any signs of the missing diver. Rescue crews are using a buoy as their focal point for the search. The buoy was left behind by the two friends to mark the spot where they think they last saw Larry. Freed's disappearance has both saddened and surprised his family because they say the father of four is a very strong swimmer and practically lives in the ocean. They are praying this loving husband and devoted father somehow survived and just hasn't yet been found. |
