NARRAGANSETT, Rhode Island (27 August 2007) -- A man described as an "experienced diver" died yesterday after losing one of his fins while scuba diving off the coast of Rhode Island.

At about 1:15pm on Sunday afternoon, Narragansett rescue workers responded to a call for help from people onshore who saw two divers in distress.

According to Police Lt. William McGovern, Evan Davidson, 43, of Brewster, lost one of his fins and as he was trying to recover it, something went wrong.

His dive buddy pulled him out of the water but by then it may already have been too late.

Paramedics rushed Davidson to South County Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The accident is under investigation and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
