HAWKE'S BAY, New Zealand (27 August 2007) -- An injured scuba diver was flown to a Navy hyperbaric chamber after being examined at Hawke's Bay Hospital.

The injured diver, a 39-year-old male, had been involved in a diver training exercise at Lake Taupo.

After diving at the lake, the man started to feel symptoms consistent with decompression sickness (the bends) during the car trip back.

Friends took the injured diver to Hawke's Bay Hospital where doctors examined him and decided he should receive emergency hyperbaric medical treatment.

The man was flown to a hyperbaric chamber at the Devonport Naval Base in Auckland.
