BALI, Indonesia (2 Sep 2007) -- A tourist who was scuba diving with MM Diving in Bali remains missing after a week and is presumed dead. Milea Bauerova, a 41-year-old Czech tourist disappeared on August 24 while scuba diving at Blue Corner, a high-risk dive site in Nusa Penida. Authorities told CDNN Bauerova had logged less than 40 dives and was diving with a 15-year-old junior diver. According to the manager of another dive center based in the same area, MM Diving owners Milan and Monica Jeglikova continued "business-as-usual" as if the accident had not happened. Instead of joining other boats searching for Bauerova, MM Diving resumed dive trips to the same high-risk dive site a day after the accident. Rescue officials blamed MM Diving for ignoring warnings that sea conditions in July and August would be inappropriate for diving operations. "I don't know why the diving company ignored the warning and (I don't know) on what assumptions they saw it was safe to take divers to that site," said Putu Suardana from the Denpasar Search and Rescue team. The Blue Corner dive site is located off the point of Nusa Lembongan, a narrow island to the northwest of Nusa Penida. Other dive operators said the site, which is extremely demanding with strong currents, high waves and strong winds, is suitable only for the most experienced divers. In November last year, MM Diving lost two divers who were later found dead in a similar scuba diving accident. |
