SUVA, Fiji (7 Sep 2007) -- A Naval diver died on Tuesday while diving to remove parts of derelict boats beside the naval jetty in Suva.

Military spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Mosese Tikoitoga said Leone Salabogi, 27, died about 1.15pm.

He said a board of inquiry was investigating the matter and they were also awaiting the post mortem examination result.

"There is not much I can say at the moment because l have not received anything on the post mortem examination results," he said.

Lt-Col Tikoitoga said it was the duty of the Navy to clear debris and derelict boats along the Suva Harbour and Jetty.

"It is part of their work to clear the area to ensure that the jetty as well as the harbour is safe for users.

"It is so unfortunate a life was lost during the process," he said.
