CUCKMERE HAVEN, UK (11 Sep 2007) -- Two divers scuba diving off the Mac D dive boat were airlifted to a recompression chamber after an out-of-air emergency ascent.

The divers, thought to be suffering from decompression sickness (the bends) were airlifted to a hyperbaric chamber at Haslar Hospital, Portsmouth.

Authorities said one of the divers ran out of air at a depth of 38 meters. The divers then aborted the dive and started an emergency out-of-air ascent.

During the ascent, the divers encountered another problem, which forced them to ascend rapidly to the surface without making a required safety stop.

The crew of the Mac D dive boat called for help and the Newhaven lifeboat, Solent coastguards and a rescue helicopter rushed to the scene of the accident.

Authorities declined to comment on the condition of the divers.
