CAMPBELL RIVER, Canada (19 Sep 2007) -- The community of Klemtu is in mourning after a diver drowned while working on a fish farm near the small West Coast village.

On September 12 Stewart Edward Wallis, a 19-year-old Klemtu man, drowned while working to remove dead salmon from a net pen at a Marine Harvest Canada farm site near the village, which is located on the West Coast north of Vancouver Island.

"We're very, very sorry that this has occurred," said Clare Backman, spokesperson for the Campbell River-based Marine Harvest. "Our entire focus right now is on the village and the people and the family, and on making sure this doesn't happen again."

The man was working for a Campbell River-based diving company, which is contracted by Marine Harvest to do maintenance on fish farm net pens. The work includes removing dead fish as well as inspecting and cleaning nets.
