SAIPAN (5 Nov 2007) — A female tourist died and a dive instructor was arrested after a scuba diving accident in Saipan.

Myung Hyun Song, 48, a Korean tourist, died during a dive trip to LaoLao Bay with three other tourists.

Police said Yuk Seok Kim, a Korean scuba diving instructor, and an identified divemaster organized the dive tour and led the group into the water at the dive site.

As the group entered the ocean at about 10:30am and prepared to descend beneath the ocean's surface, Song complained of chest pains.

Dive instructor Kim told the women to return to shore alone and she apparently lost consciousness on the way back and drowned.

Still at the ocean's surface, Kim noticed that the victim was in trouble, canceled the dive and brought her back to shore as the other tourists in the dive group called for help.

Medics responded to the diving emergency and rushed the victim to Commonwealth Health Center where she was pronounced dead after attempts to revive her failed.

Police arrested Kim for illegally operating a scuba diving tour and instruction business without required government certification and with a required business license.

The police investigation of the scuba diving accident is ongoing and an autopsy has been scheduled to determine the exact cause of death.
