AUCKLAND, New Zealand (2 Dec 2007) — Police say they won't know what killed scuba diver James Aperahama until early next year. Aperahama, 46, died after a scuba diving accident off Whatipu, near the Manukau Harbour entrance. Friends who were diving with Aperahama for crayfish said he suddenly resurfaced and got the bends (decompression sickness). Instead of airlifting the severely injured diver to a Navy hyperbaric chamber, Aperahama was taken to North Shore Hospital by ambulance, which took nearly an hour. Another 75 minutes elapsed before the victim finally received medical treatment in a decompression chamber. Aperahama died the next day from a brain embolism. Senior Constable Paul Herman said police investigators hope to find scuba diving equipment the victim ditched when he suddenly surfaced. To date, police divers have not been able to find any of the victim's missing scuba diving equipment. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORK |
