CAPE TOWN, South Africa (3 Dec 2007) — The body of a 37-year-old diver was found offshore on Sunday at Melkbosstrand in Cape Town, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon said Cliff Hinds — an advocate — went missing on Saturday morning after a scuba diving session with his friend.

"The Police Dive Unit, NSRI volunteers, including the man's family and friends located his body during a dive search on Sunday near to where he was believed to have gone missing.

"This was at a depth of approximately two-and-a-half metres," said Lambinon.

According to his "dive buddy" Andrew Goodwin, they went to scuba dive near their residence in Melkbosstrand on Saturday morning.

"Goodwin said they swam about 50 metres out to sea to sit on a rock before they began scuba-diving.

"Hinds told him he was feeling tired and decided to swim back to shore."

Lambinon said Andrew apparently dived for about 20 minutes and found no sign of his friend when he returned to their bakkie.

"A search was conducted when he could not find him at a friend's apartment where they usually visit," he said.

Scuba death
A British tourist who nearly drowned while scuba diving off Tasmania was airlifted to Hobart.

Despite a full-scale and extensive search, he could not be found until Sunday.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine the cause of his death, said Lambinon.
