WISEMAN'S FERRY, Australia (12 Dec 2007) — A woman drowned while learning to scuba dive in the Macdonald River.

Hanna Schmahl, 62, disappeared in the Macdonald River on Tuesday afternoon between 2pm and 2:30pm about seven kilometers up river from Wiseman's Ferry.

Police told CDNN the victim was learning to dive with a friend in "murky" conditions when she went missing.

After the friend called for help, authorities searched the river but failed to find Schmahl on Tuesday.

The search resumed on Wednesday morning and searchers found the victim's scuba diving equipment at about 9:40am. An hour or so later, they recovered her body.

The fatal scuba diving accident is under investigation and an autopsy has been scheduled.
