BRITISH VIRGIN ISLANDS (21 Dec 2007) — A tourist from Florida who disappeared while scuba diving in the British Virgin Islands has been found dead. US Coast Guard officials told CDNN Wayne Johanning, 53, of Fort Myers, Fla., went missing while scuba diving off a chartered 41-foot catamaran with his son and another diver. All of the divers had resurfaced between Little Jost Van Dyke and Green Cay and were surface snorkeling back to the boat when Johanning disappeared. Johanning's son went back down but could not find his father. After the group called for help, BVI Search and Rescue and the U.S. Coast Guard launched a massive air and sea search spanning 373 nautical miles that included at least one helicopter, a cutter, a private airplane and several smaller vessels. After failing to find the diver on Wednesday, the search resumed on Thursday and BVI Search and Rescue divers found the victim's body near the dive site where he was last seen. Search officials said the body had been mauled by sharks. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORK |
