QUEENSCLIFF, Australia (30 Dec 2007) — A man suffering from decompression sickness after a scuba diving accident off the Queenscliff coast was airlifted to hospital.

Officials told CDNN the as yet unidentified 51-year-old male surfaced at about 4:15pm with signs of decompression sickness, commonly known as "the bends".

According to unconfirmed reports, the diver reached a maximum depth during his dive of 76 meters (250 feet) and had a total bottom time of about 90 minutes.

Police speculated the diver failed to do required decompression stops and ascended too quickly.

Paramedics transported the injured diver by road ambulance to Swan Bay where he was transferred to a helicopter and taken to The Alfred trauma centre in Melbourne.

Hospital officials told CDNN the man is in stable condition after receiving hyperbaric medical treatment.
