Child care non-profit moves on after director's scuba diving death

GALION, Ohio (7 Feb 2008) — Michelle Moore, director of Child Care Choices, is missed by many.

"Michelle couldn't wait to attend the professional development conference for three weeks in Los Angeles. She was looking forward to getting back in the water. We take solace in the fact that she died doing what she loved," said Interim Director Dawn Fraizer.

Moore, 38, died in a scuba diving accident Jan. 20 in California.

"We are doing as well as can be expected. We have had grief counselors in from Home Care Matters, which has really helped. We know what we need to do and have all been in work mode since I got the call about Michelle," Fraizer said.

Child Care Choices registers day care providers in Crawford, Morrow, Richland and Marion counties.

"We do complete health, fire and safety checks on all providers along with complete background and reference checks," Fraizer said.

The agency, which opened its doors in 1995, helps parents find the proper day care provider for their child.

"We are trying to carry on the passion Michelle had in advocating for children. Michelle increased community involvement 15 fold since she took over as director in 2000," Fraizer said.

Because many of the agency's programs are funded through grants, all staff members have their own jobs to do.

"There are different initiatives carried out by one or two staff persons so each person is well aware of what they need to do. We were all very independent workers as it was so the agency has kept moving forward since learning of Michelle's death," Fraizer said.

Fraizer will continue in her role as interim director until a new director is hired.

"The board meets again in about a week and a half," Fraizer said.
