Wakiki Diving owner injured in explosion

HONOLULU, Hawaii (11 Feb 2008) — The owner of a local dive shop was rushed to hospital after an explosion.

Police told CDNN the 28-year-old owner of Waikiki Diving Inc at 424 Nahua St. was taken to Straub Clinic & Hospital where he is being treated for serious burns to 18 percent of his body.

City Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said the accident happened shortly after 7pm.

The injured dive shop owner told fire rescue officials that he had heard strange sounds from an air compressor used to fill scuba diving tanks.

The owner attempted to adjust the machine just before it exploded.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation.
