Inquest: Scientists feared Shark Shield would attract sharks

ADELAIDE, Australia (27 Feb 2008) — Adelaide University staff have questioned the relevance and capabilities of shark deterrent devices at a coronial inquest into a shark attack that claimed a student's life.

Jarrod Stehbens, 23, was on a University diving trip when he was taken by a shark at Glenelg in Adelaide in August 2005.

Another research student Justin Rowntree was also in the water and witnessed the attack.

The inquest heard Mr Rowntree was never told that devices known as shark shields were available and were stored on the boat they were diving from.

But Gerald Buttfield and other staff from Adelaide University have questioned whether shark shields should be used at all.

Mr Buttfield has told the inquest the University was worried that the devices attracted sharks before deterring them, and posed a health risk, especially to pregnant women or anyone with heart problems.

Mr Stebhens's body was never recovered.
