HIGH SPRINGS, Florida (11 Mar 2008) — The body of a Swiss tourist who died while scuba diving with a rebreather in the Ginnie Springs cave system was recovered. Mark Fyvie, 35, entered the cave system alone at Devil's Eye around noon on Monday. At about 9:00pm after Fyvie failed to show up for dinner as planned, cave diver Cory Mearns started searching for the missing diver and found his body 90 minutes later about 3,800 ft from the entry point. Due to darkness and safety concerns, authorities waited until Tuesday morning to remove the body from the cave system. Fyvie, a certified cave diver, tech diver and diving instructor, was using a rebreather, which allows for longer and deeper dives, but significantly increases the inherent risks of scuba diving. A resident of Zollikon in northern Switzerland, Fyvie had traveled the world to explore caves and shipwrecks according to his personal web site. "In recent years technical diving has become a bigger part of my life, causing my focus to shift away from sport diving instruction to more technical activities. When I want to enjoy myself you'll find me far inside a cave system or penetrating a deep wreck," Fyvie wrote. Fyvie planned to marry his fiance in Venice on September 6. | | Swiss tourist Mark Fyvie died while diving with a rebreather in the Ginnie Springs cave system.
