SUNSHINE KEY, Florida (14 Mar 2008) — Police recovered the body of a diver who went missing on Thursday in the Florida Keys while free diving. Joshua Choi, 18, disappeared while spear fishing with family and friends near Bahia Honda State Park. Authorities said there was no evidence that Choi became entangled underwater indicating that he may have died from shallow water blackout, the leading cause of death among free divers. Divers who experience shallow water blackout lose consciousness usually as they resurface from a breath-holding dive. According to a sheriff's deputy, the victim's brother, Jacob, alerted their father that Joshua had not resurfaced from a dive. The father started searching the area but unable to find his missing son, he called 911 for help at about 6:20pm. The Coast Guard sent two boats and a helicopter to the scene of the accident. Soon after, the Monroe County Sheriff's Office and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission joined the search for Choi. The above-water search continued through the night and divers resumed searching underwater on Friday morning. |
