WELLINGTON, New Zealand (22 Mar 2008) — A man who lost consciousness while scuba diving in Cook Strait was airlifted to hospital for hyperbaric medical treatment. The 20-year-old Tuamarina resident was diving with friends just north of the Tory Channel entrance in Cook Strait. At about 2:30pm other divers in the group noticed the man floating unconscious at the surface. The dive boat crew called for help and officials scrambled a Westpac Rescue helicopter. When the helicopter crew arrived at the scene of the scuba diving accident, the diver had regained consciousness but was showing signs of decompression sickness. The injured man was winched aboard the helicopter and taken to Wellington Hospital and later to a hyperbaric chanber at Christchurch Hospital. © CDNN - CYBER DIVER NEWS NETWORK |
