MONROE, Maine (11 Apr 2008) — A sergeant with the Waldo County Sheriff's Department in Maine died Thursday night while scuba diving in a private pond off the Back Brooks Road. Sgt. Mark Schade, 42, was off-duty when he died while diving to help Sheriff Scott Story clean an aerator in the pond. Officials said Schade, who was diving alone, first removed the aerator unit from the pond, cleaned it and then was putting it back when something went wrong. At about 4:45pm people onshore noticed that Schade had not resurfaced and called for help. Divers from the Maine State Police, sheriff's deputies, game wardens and state troopers rushed to the scene and pulled the victim from the water about two hours after he was reportered missing. A LifeFlight helicopter rushed Schade to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where he was pronounced dead. |
