UK (11 Apr 2008) — At an inquest into the death of a scuba diver, the managing director of AP Valves defended the company's rebreather product and blamed the victim for failing to properly maintain the unit. Managing director Martin John Parker testified that Michael Moyle's rebreather unit had been "badly maintained". He also suggested that Bromsgrove had probably forgotten to turn on his equipment before entering the water. Bromsgrove died on the deck of Scott Waterman's Endeavor dive boat in April 2006 during a four-day BSAC dive club trip off the Isle of Man. Waterman called for help but the victim was already dead by the time the Port Erin lifeboat arrived. Bromgrove was diving solo with a rebreather unit manufactured by AP Valves when he encountered problems and died. Parker told the inquest that his company's rebreathers are rigorously tested to British and European safety standards, and he denied there had been problems with the unit's battery casing. |
