BERRY HEAD, UK (19 May 2008) — A man who was diving with the 'Samuel Irvin' dive boat was airlifted to hospital after a scuba diving accident off Berry Head.

Authorities declined to identify the injured 56-year-old male diver.

A coastguard helicopter was scrambled at about 10am on Saturday in response to a call for help.

The helicopter took the injured diver to the Diving Diseases Research Centre in Plymouth for treatement in a hyperbaric chamber.

Witnesses said the diver ascended too rapidly from a depth of about 50 meters (164 feet).
