Coast Guard calls off search for 19-year-old scuba diver

DECEPTION PASS, Washington (19 May 2008) — The Coast Guard has called off its search for a 19-year-old female college student presumed dead after a scuba diving accident in Puget Sound.

Authorities declined to identify the victim, who disappeared while scuba diving off Rosario Beach near Deception Pass.

Coast Guard officials said their search on Monday covered 20 square miles off the northwest tip of Whidbey Island.

A Coast Guard HH-65 rescue helicopter from Air Station Port Angeles and two 10-meter rescue boats from Coast Guard Station Bellingham assited in the search.

A second rescue helicopter from Naval Air Station Whidbey Island also joined in the missing diver search.
