WHITSUNDAYS, Australia (23 May 2008) — A massive search is underway for two tourists who went missing after a scuba diving accident off the Queensland coast.

Police said the two divers, a 38-year-old British male and a 40-year-old American female disappeared at Gary's Lagoon in the Whitsundays while scuba diving off the Pacific Star dive charter vessel.

The crew of the Pacific Star started searching for the missing pair at about 2:30pm when they were expected to resurface but could not find them and notified authorities of a missing diver emergency.

Officials said at least three fixed-wing aircraft, helicopters and several boats are searching throught the night for the missing divers.

One of the aircraft assisting in the search is equipped with forward looking infra-red equipment.
