CAPE ELIZABETH, Maine (24 May 2008) — A man learning to scuba dive lost consciousness and nearly died off Cape Elizabeth.

Police declined to identify the 61-year-old scuba diving accident victim.

Witnesses said the man was found unconscious at the surface after descending to a depth of about 4 meters on his first open water dive to practice alternate air source breathing.

Other divers started CPR in the water as they pulled the diver to shore.

The man was rushed to hospital where officials have not yet released details about his condition.
