NEW JERSEY (28 May 2008) — A diver was airlifted to hospital after a scuba diving accident off Barnegat Light.

Authorities declined to identify the 31-year-old woman who was diving off the Dina Dee dive boat.

According to witnesses, the woman surfaced from a 23-meter (75-foot) dive with symptoms of decompression sickness (the bends).

The captain of the Dina Dee called for help and the Coast Guard scrambled a helicopter that took the injured diver to University of Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia for medical treatment in a hyperbaric chamber.

Hospital officials have not commented on the woman's condition.
