PORTRONAN, Ireland (1 June 2008) — A Coastguard lifeboat rescued four scuba divers off the north Donegal coast. The divers, all members of the Sligo Sub-Aqua Club, were swept away from their dive boat by a strong current off Portronan near Malin Head. The divers clipped themselves together at the surface and struggled to swim against a current that was pushing them towards Scotland. The dive boat crew called for help and authorities scrambled two search helicopters and a lifeboat to search for the missing divers. In the end, a fishing boat spotted the divers, notified authorities and the Greencastle lifeboat completed the rescue. All of the divers were found in good condition after spending three hours drifting in the current. Coastguard officials said the divers enhanced the probability they would be rescued by staying together. "They clipped themselves together, so instead of looking for four individual divers we were looking for one unit, which was a great thing as well." |
