First scuba diving course dive nearly kills man at Dutch Springs

LOWER NAZARETH TOWNSHIP, Pennsylvania (8 June 2008) — A man nearly died while scuba diving for the first time at Dutch Springs.

Thomson Ly, 20, of Elmhurst, New York, was pulled to the surface from a depth of about 11 meters and taken in an ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital where he is listed in fair condition.

There have been several deaths at the Dutch Springs scuba diving park since it opened in 1980.

Robert A. French, 59, of Binghamton, N.Y., was pronounced dead after a scuba-diving accident in May, 2007.

Michael Devenny, 50, of Westhampton, N.J., died while scuba diving in the quarry on October 28, 2007.

Casey Parent, 21, of Connecticut, died of an apparent gas embolism in 2003.

Eugene Pietroloungo, 44, of New Jersey, was found drowned at the bottom of the lake in 2001.

Six others have died there: one in 1999, two in 1991 and three in 1986.
