CANCUN, Mexico (9 June 2008) — A young college student who was injured while diving off Cancun was declared brain dead. Lissa Thang Chung, 18, suffered severe injuries when the Caribbean Carnival owned "Sea Star" tourist boat partially sank near Chitales reef in National Marine Park. Authorities in Cancun told CDNN Chung was in the water snorkeling near the Sea Star when it sank and they believe the big catamaran hit her and dragged beneath the ocean's surface. After the accident, Chung was taken to Galenia Hospital where she was listed in critical condition. Hospital officials said the victim was in cardiac arrest when she arrived at the hospital. According to the Red Cross, at least five other tourists were also treated for injuries including shock and two broken arms. Initial reports indicated the Sea Star may have been overloaded, however, CDNN has confirmed the boat is certified for a maximum of 250 passengers and was carrying 220 tourists when it sank. Although the Sea Star was not overloaded, it did enter the National Marine Park off Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancun and Punta Nizuc in violation of park regulations which forbid vessels carrying more than 80 passengers to enter. The accident in under investigation. |
