JACKSON COUNTY, Florida (9 June 2008) — A scuba diver died shortly after midnight at Blue Springs Recreational Area. Joel Mitchell Tubbs, 41, apparently drowned while cave diving with a female friend. According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, the pair entered the cavern and started to deploy a safety line. During that cave diving safety procedure, the lead diver saw her buddy's scooter sinking in the cavern and then noticed that he had ascended to the ceiling of the cave where he appeared to be unconscious. The lead diver pulled Tubbs to the surface, brought him to shore, called 911 for help and initiated CPR. Jackson County Fire and Rescue responded to the call at 12:37am but failed to revive the victim. The accident is under investigation and the Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy to determine the cause of death. |
