MONTEREY, California (13 June 2008) — A man died while scuba diving alone next to the Coast Guard station in Monterey.

Gregory Dilley, 48, of Salinas, California, was found unconscious floating at the ocean's surface about 45 minutes after he entered the water.

Witnesses said the victim was pulled to shore where good samaritans attempted to revive him with CPR.

Paramedics soon arrived at the scene of the scuba diving accident and took Dilley to the Community Hospital of Monterey Peninsula where he was pronounced dead.

The Monterey Coroner's Office will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death.

Diving solo

By diving solo, Dilley broke one of the two basic rules of safe scuba diving.

Entry-level divers are taught to 1) always breathe to avoid lung embolisms and 2) always dive with another diver to enhance safety with "buddy" support.
