Another diver dies in California

MENDOCINO, California (25 June 2008) — Another man died while diving off the coast of Northern California.

Authorities declined to identify the man but told CDNN the victim was in his 30s and appeared to be physically fit.

Fire department officials said the man was diving for abalone at Russian Gulch State Park when his friend who was acting as a lookout lost sight of him.

The friend called for help at about 10:00am and a missing diver search was launched immediately.

Several agencies assisted in the search, which included one helicopter, at least one boat and numberous rescuers searching the beach.

At about 3:30pm, rescuers found the victim's body at a depth of about 12 meters (40 feet).

Mendocino Volunteer Fire Department Chief Danny Hervilla said the conditions were good for diving.

The death was the second diving fatality this month and the fourth this year.
