GINNIE SPRINGS, Florida (28 June 2008) — A scuba diving accident in Florida nearly killed a renowned young poet.

Shannon Leigh, 20, was critically injured while cave diving at Ginnie Springs.

Witnesses said Leigh was diving with two other divers when she encountered problems maintaining her equilibrium.

Apparently she separated from the buddy divers and returned to the entrance of the cave.

A dive instructor with another group found her unconscious, and with the help of another diver, pulled her up to the surface.

The divers called for help and paramedics rushed Leigh to a hospital where she is in a coma.

Leigh moved to Atlanta, Georgia from Austin, Texas in 2006 to attend Georgia State University.

She was a featured poet in HBO's Def Poetry Slam and placed third last year in the National Poetry Slam.
