ALEXANDRIA BAY, New York (29 June 2008) — Jefferson County sheriff's investigators have identified a man who died while scuba diving near Wellesley Island.

Officials told CDNN that Lawrence Crom, 45, was the scuba diving accident victim.

Witnesses said Crom was found unconscious at the surface after he ascended from the wreck of the freighter Roy Jodrey.

Boaters who saw him called for help and paramedics immediately responded to the injured diver emergency.

The victim was rushed to River Hospital in Alexandria Bay where he was pronounced dead.

The wreck of the Roy Jodrey, which sank to a depth of 160 feet in 1974, is popular with technical divers.

Officials told CDNN several divers have died while exploring the wreck.
