CHARLESTON, South Carolina (6 July 2008) — An experienced diver died after a scuba diving accident off Charleston, South Carolina.

Tim Edwards, 45, was scuba diving with eight other divers off the 36-ft Rockville-based Muntu Too dive boat when he apparently ascended too rapidly.

Officials said the results of an autopsy indicate Edwards died of an air embolism.

Witnesses said Edwards was spearfishing when he lost contact with his buddy diver.

Divers in the group later spotted the victim floating unconsious at the surface.

The boat crew called for help and the Coast Guard scrambled a helicopter, which airlifted Edwards to the Medical University of South Carolina where he was pronounced dead.

Police are investigating the fatal scuba diving accident and hope the victim's dive computer will help them understand what happened.
