SONOMA, California (10 Aug 2008) — A man drowned while diving in Stillwater Cove off California's Sonoma Coast.

Authorities told CDNN the diving accident victim was 54 years old but declined to release his identity pending notification of kin.

Witnesses told police they saw the victim struggling in kelp as other divers tried to save him.

The other divers brought the man to shore and started CPR.

Rescuers responding to a call for help arrived and took over CPR but failed to revive the victim and he was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:40pm.

The diving fatality was the fifth this year involving abalone divers hunting off California's North Coast.
