CORNONE, Italy (27 Aug 2008) — A diving accident killed a man who was spearfishing near Cornone.

Fulvio Busia, 37, of Poviglio, apparently drowned while freediving in an underwater fishing competition held near Isola Capo Rizzuto.

Authorities believe Busia may have been a victim of shallow water blackout, a common cause of death among freedivers.

Rescuers found Busia's body about 600 meters offshore after his family called for help when he did not return to shore.

Medical officials told CDNN an initial examination of the body showed no signs that Busia had been hit by a boat.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
