IRIAN JAYA, Indonesia (3 Sep 2008) — A tourist is missing and presumed dead after a scuba diving accident in Irian Jaya.

Authorities told CDNN that Robert Zsupuru, a tourist from Poland, disappeared on August 29 while scuba diving with at least 10 others near Matas Island in Cenderawasih Bay National Park.

The tourist group had been diving in the park since August 27.

Based on interviews with other divers in the group, rescue officials believe Zsupuru ran out of air at a depth of about 80 meters.

Local police, park workers and tourist divers searched for Zsupuru, but no trace of the missing diver was found.

Police said the victim is now presumed dead and the search has been called off.

The 1,453,500-hectare Cenderawasih Bay National Park is a popular scuba diving destination in Irian Jaya.
