AUCKLAND, New Zealand (19 Oct 2008) — A man who was injured while diving off the coast of Whakatane was airlifted to hospital.
Authorities declined to identify the 70-year-old Matata resident who was suffering from decompression sickness (the bends).
TrustPower TECT Rescue Helicopter spokesman Liam Brettkelly said the diving accident victim was taken to Whakatane Hospital.
After it was confirmed the man was suffering the bends, he was transferred to Auckland's Devonport Naval base hospital where he is receiving medical treatment in a hyperbaric chamber.
