NANAIMO, Canada (20 Oct 2008) — A man died while scuba diving off Snake Island near Nanaimo on Saturday afternoon.
Authorities declined to identify the scuba diving accident victim but told CDNN he was an American from the Seattle area.
Witnesses said the man surfaced in distress from a dive on the HMCS Saskatchewan, a ship that was sunk to attract divers to the Nanaimo area.
Other divers pulled the victim back to the dive charter boat he was diving from where he soon lost consciousness.
Attempts to revive the victim failed.
Authorities said the man was part of a group of 10 divers from the Seattle area who booked the trip with a local dive boat operator.
In November of last year, Daniel Harrington died while scuba diving at the HMCS Cape Breton, another ship sunk off Gabriola Island as a scuba diving attraction.
