KONA, Hawaii (22 Oct 2008) — A tourist who was diving with his wife drowned after he got caught in high surf.
Edward R. McCarthy-Slaughter, 40, of Hasbrouck Heights, New Jersey was diving without scuba at the south end of Punaluu Beach at about noon when he got caught in high surf.
Bystanders pulled the victim to shore and called for help.
Paramedics rushed McCarthy-Slaughter to Kona Hospital but he never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at 12:58pm.
McCarthy-Slaughter's wife survived the tragic accident.
