CAIRNS, Australia (22 Oct 2008) — A tourist died while diving off Green Island.

Authorities declined to identify the diving accident victim pending notification of kin.

Queensland state police said the victim was a 47-year-old Japanese national visiting Australia with his wife.

The couple paid for a trip from Cairns to the Great Barrier Reef aboard the high-speed Quicksilver dive charter boat.

Witnesses said the victim's wife was the first to alert authorities that her husband was in trouble.

Lifeguards and Quicksilver staff launched a full-scale search and found the man's body on the seabed about 90 meters from the beach at Green Island.

Authorities said the victim was not diving with scuba equipment and an autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.
