TE KAHA, New Zealand (30 Oct 2008) — A man who was injured while scuba diving was airlifted to hospital.

Authorities have not yet identified the 31-year-old scuba diver but told CDNN he was taken to Te Kaha Medical Centre after resurfacing with signs of decompression sickness (the bends), which can be fatal.

After doctors at the medical centre decided the injured scuba diver required medical treatment in a hyperbaric chamber, he was airlifted by the Tauranga-based Trust Power TECT rescue helicopter to the Devonport Naval Hospital.
