SEATTLE, Washington (8 Nov 2008) — A man died after he was severely injured last week while scuba diving in Elliott Bay.

Officials told CDNN that Duy Tran, 30, died at Harborview Medical Center after he suffered severe brain damage and spent six days in a coma.

Tran was pulled from Elliott Bay at about 11:00am on November 1 and rushed to Harborview after he encountered problems and lost consciousness while participating in a scuba diving rescue course.

Two other divers including Seattle resident Alex Gilman brought Tran up from a depth of about 30 meters near Seacrest Park.

They were also hospitalized as a precaution after ascending quickly and without making safety stops.

Police said the fatal scuba diving accident is still under investigation and it is not yet known what caused Tran to lose consciousness at depth.

Close family

Tran was one of five brothers and sisters who moved with their parents to America from Vietnam when they were still children.

"Growing up it's always been the five of us," sister Lila Tran wrote in her blog.  "Now that Duy is gone, family gatherings will be quiet, cold, and empty."
