VANCOUVER, Canada (15 Nov 2008) — A California man who was scuba diving is in hospital after a near-fatal accident.

Authorities declined to identify the 20-year-old male victim who was scuba diving with friends near West Vancouver's Whytecliff park.

The other divers said the victim apparently panicked after water entered his mask and bolted to the surface.

When the other divers reached him, he was unconscious but still breathing.

West Vancouver fire-rescue personnel and B.C. Ambulance paramedics responded to a 911 call and rushed the scuba diving accident victim to Vancouver General Hospital, where he received hyperbaric medical treatment.

The accident is under investigation.
