SPOKANE, Washington (18 Dec 2008) — The widow of a man who died during a scuba diving certification course has filed a lawsuit against Scuba Center of Spokane and its owner, dive instructor Daniel Arteaga. Authorities told CDNN that Maureen Maher-Gray filed a suit in Spokane County Superior Court that alleges Arteaga acted in a "reckless manner" and seeks damages for negligence, gross negligence and infliction of emotional distress. The suit, which was filed by Spokane attorney Robert Dunn, states that John and Maureen Gray, who had no experience scuba diving, enrolled in an open water scuba diving class at Scuba Center of Spokane on February 6, 2008. On March 29, the couple joined 15 other student divers for open water training in Hood Canal. During his first open water dive in extremely poor visibility, Gray suffered a nosebleed, pain in his right eye and difficulty breathing after a mask squeeze that forced him to abort the dive and return to shore with an assistant instructor. In the afternoon several hours after the first dive, Gray enter the water for his second open water dive. The lead dive instructor formed the student divers into a flying V formation but Gray and two assistant instructors lost contact with the main group, and then lost contact with each other. Another diver who was not part of the Scuba Center of Spokane group saw Gray on the seabed with his regulator out of his mouth. |
