BLENHEIM, New Zealand (28 Dec 2008) — The father of a young bride who died while diving at Matamanoa Island Resort warned tourists that Fiji's safety standards are lax. Mark Crawley said better diving and boating safety standards would have prevented the death of his daughter, Rebecca. Rebecca Stockwell, 26, had been married for six days when she was killed while diving with her husband, Hayden. She died after the propeller of a boat driven by a Matamanoa Island Resort employee hit her in the head. Crawley founded the Forever 26 trust to warn tourists about lax safety standards at Pacific Island resorts and campaign for tougher regulations that would enhance traveler safety. Crawley told reporters that travelers need to focus on safety, "just as much as they consider their menu or activities when choosing their holiday." Fiji police said the diver of the boat that hit Crawley's daughter has been charged with manslaughter. |
