PORT HACKING, Australia (12 Jan 2009) — A dive boat captain and eight scuba divers were rescued after the Sea Tamer II capsized. Authorities told CDNN the Dolans Bay-based 8.3 meter catamaran power boat capsized about two nautical miles off Port Hacking at the Marley sponge gardens. The captain told rescuers that Sea Tamer II started to list after one of the vessel's two hulls started taking on water. The bilge pump could not keep up with the flow of incoming water and the captain called for help on his marine radio at about 9:30am. He then told the divers to put on their BCDs and jump into the water. Seconds later the boat rolled over as rescue teams and other boats in the area rushed to the scene of the accident. Rescue officials told CDNN a Westpac LifeSaver Rescue Helicopter, Cronulla District LifeSavers and the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard all participated in the rescue. The captain and crew were taken to Dolans Bay where paramedics stood by, however, no one was injured and no one was hospitalized. NSW Maritime towed the vessel to Port Hacking. Botany Bay Water Police are investigating the accident to determine why the multi-hull dive boat capsized. Sea Tamer II owner Jonathan Dolden said he hopes to repair the boat and get it back in operation "as soon as possible". |
