Inquest: Spasm led to death of man paralyzed by scuba diving accident

HATFIELD, UK (22 Jan 2009) — A verdict of accidental death was recorded at an inquest into a freak accident that killed a quadriplegic man.

Ray Mahil, 52, died after he suffered a spasm, knocked the controls of his electric wheelchair and plunged into an icy river in Bishop's Stortford, Herts.

Mahil had been alone on the river bank after drinking with friends last summer.

Mahil, who was paralyzed from the neck down in 1991after a scuba diving accident, is thought to have died instantly from shock.
